Staying Cool in Arlington
Once again, June and the start of the summer season have come in just gang-busters HOT! Arlington has already had a few 100-degree days, and as anyone in this area knows, we’re bound to have many many more before the summer heat finally subsides.
So what’s your favorite thing to do to keep cool?
Do you go to the water park at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor? What about those Slip-n-Slides…got one of those in your yard?
Some of us really love a good sno-ball, and often indulge in that cool sweet treat. One of the best Arlington sno-ball makers is in a little hut at the corner of Randol Mill and Cooper. Next time you head out to a Rangers game, or if you are just in the area, check ‘em out. The “strawberry shortcake” sno-ball is a winner!
So, c’mon, share with us your keep-cool secrets!
Have fun out there, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

I have lived in Arlington all my life and would change a thing!
How many of you know that Benny Binion won money here in Arlington that he took to Las Vegas to start the Horseshoe Casino? Yes is so true!! Would you like to know other famous people who came to Arlington to try their luck at gambling. On West Division past Bowen (just before you go down the hill) on the north side of the road is Arlington Baptist College, aka Top o’ Terrace in days gone by. There are tunnels, secret rooms and lots of history of a casino that was visited by Bonnie and Clyde, John Wayne and some others that you would never think would now of Arlington, before the Cowboys, Rangers of even Six Flags. Take a morning or afternoon to join a tour and learn of the Arlington that most people don’t know. Call 817-461-8741 and ask for Vickie Bryant, Most of the tours are in the inside and then out on the campus grounds to see the beautiful views.
I love to take my son to Bad Koenigshofen Aquatic Center at Stovall Park. It’s cheap and he loves to play in the water features. Love the Arlington pools!
I’ve lived in Texas all my life. You know it’s HOT when you go outside and your breathe feels colder than the outside air. If you stay in, movies, and shopping are your best bet. As far as outside entertainment, you need some form of water; lake, ocean or pool. If you find yourself in the great outdoors without water to dip in, I have found that going to a restroom and dipping your shirt in water and putting it back on does wonders for your body temperature. This is something I learned going to auto racing events with my two boys. DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!!!
“Long hot summer” ? You must be joking!
I came to Arlington in 1980 and the weather has been disapointingly cool every summer since!
What do you think about this heat? I love it!
Lived in Texas all my life
Is the grass dead? No
What do I do to cool off? Swim in our pool
Have I been to an outdoor concert this year? No
We keep our air on 76 degrees and use ceiling fans.
Texas is the BEST place to live!
We just bought a 12′ x 30″ Intex pool from Academy. The cost? On sale for $78. Of course, with chemicals and a strainer net, and extra pump filters, PH tester, etc. $245 total. Add 1,450 gallons of water, $35? Three days in the hot sun to level part of the back yard for installation (PX90 is for wimps) ….The first time my 8 year old daughter and her two friends from next door got in it, PRICELESS!
I was in it yesterday, and I am sure before the summer is out, we will have double our cost back in fun! Stay Cool! —-Matt and Family!
I have a suggestion on how to beat the heat. Buy my book: “Kid Richie” at Borders or Barnes & Nobles. Take it home; open a cold anything; sit back, read and enjoy! It’ll take your mind off the heat! And you’ll be entertained and inspired.
Every year it’s the same old story. People complain about the heat. It’s TEXAS! Get used to it; I did!
Walk slowly; take your time doing things; hydrate your body; seek shade wherever you can or better still, air conditioning. We have a month and a half of hot weather and a month and a half of cold weather. The rest of the year is Springtime! We have the best climate in the Country!
Hey there..I remember riding in a new 1954 red convertable with my mom and she would stop and get us a grape snow-cone and off we would go down the road with the hot wind blowing our hair and melting the snow-cone..and looking coooool in Grape. Heat was the name of the night when kids would lay on blankets and look at the stars because it was cooler to be out in the night air. So..feel the cool vibe in your own mind..close your eyes and think about cool things.

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life so i am used to the heat. What i do to cool off is i go for a swim and drink some cold beer. On occassion, i go to my lakehouse in Possum Kingdom but for the most part i go to the pool and hang out with friends and drink poolside. There’s nothing better than going to the pool on a hot summer day!
“DA HEAT, BOSS, DA HEAT!!” What to do?? Be thankful we’re not in the Arctic!! I still subscribe to the old Jerry Clower method of heat beating – “Get in your baggiest pajamas and set a chair in front of the window unit. Then prop your legs up in front of the unit and let the frosty air blow up one leg and out the other !! “Ahhhhh, REFRESHING!! Of course ,if you have central air it makes it more difficult but not impossible. I have managed (with the help of a nail gun and lots and lots of duct tape) to firmly secure myself to a ceiling outlet. The real problem with the ceiling method is all the blood pooling in your head. Like I said, not easy but possible. Then there’s the old tried and trued – My Mom used to say “that’s why God made water hoses( and wash my car while you’re at it ).
I’ve lamented for a long time at the lack of reputable shaved ice/sno-ball joints around the metroplex.
And when I say shaved ice, I don’t mean that junk they sell outside of a home improvement store or the kind that comes out of some Snoopy contraption (no offense to Snoopy of course), I mean the real-deal, so finely-shaved ice that you’ll swear you’re eating fresh fallen snow (hence the term sno-ball methinks).
In my eyes, there are only two places that I consider worthy of anyone’s time for shaved ice. First and foremost is William’s Plum Street Sno-balls in New Orleans. Second would have to be Shivers, in College Station.
Given that those two places aren’t really just up the street, I can speak for this “hut” (no lie) mentioned in the post that’s at Randol Mill and Cooper. Out of all the places around us here in Arlington that we’ve tried (and we have indeed tried a handful), it’s certainly the best.
My favorite flavor combo is blackberry and clear coconut. Get a medium, because you’ll only be disappointed when you finish your small in 5 minutes, wishing you had more.
I played with slip-n-slides as a kid. Those were classic! I’m too old for that now.
I love sno-balls. Ever since experiencing the real deal in New Orleans, I’ve been hooked. Glad to hear there’s a place in Arlington that serves them.
Other ways to stay cool? Sadly, stay indoors.
